The Electronic Technician/Electrician role, reporting to the Supervisor, Field Services, is responsible for the installation, maintenance, administration, and troubleshooting of intelligent surveillance systems, traffic management systems, and other technology located on bridges and associated properties. The responsibilities include installing, maintaining, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing industrial electrical equipment and associated electrical and electronic control systems.

This is a *safety-sensitive position. This position necessitates working in varying weather conditions, including adverse weather, being in proximity to automotive traffic and moving equipment/vehicles on the bridge, working at extreme heights ranging from 170 to 320 feet above the bridge, and in confined spaces below the bridge or within the bridge towers. Adherence to HHB Safety standards, policies, and processes is crucial, encompassing hazard assessments, the use of required Personal Protective Equipment, proper access to confined spaces, and diligent safety observations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

·        Adhere to HHB safety protocols, procedures, standards, and Safe Work Practices.

·        Complete mandatory safety training, Job Hazard Assessments, hazard reporting, and corrective measures to eliminate, mitigate, or control hazards.

·        Contribute suggestions to enhance the Safety program.

·        Install, inspect, replace, test, troubleshoot, calibrate, and repair ethernet, coaxial cable, electronic control systems, electronic devices, and associated hardware.

·        Perform installation, maintenance, and repair tasks on surveillance cameras and related electronic technologies located on bridges or bridge properties.

·        Troubleshoot and maintain traffic management system hardware and associated software.

·        Support intelligent surveillance systems, traffic management systems, and other electronic technologies used in bridge operations.

·        Execute preventive maintenance programs.

·        Conduct scheduled electronic checks on bridges and buildings.

·        Maintain comprehensive maintenance records.

·        Perform other duties as assigned.

 Requirements:

·        Education in Electronic/Electrical Engineering or equivalent on-the-job experience

·        Complete and maintain Red Seal Electrician Certification.

·        Clean driving record and hold a valid Class 5 Nova Scotia Driver’s License. Driver Abstract will be requested before employment.

·        Demonstrate intermediate computer proficiency.

·        Capable of performing in high-stress situations with minimal supervision, especially in safety-sensitive roles.

·        Mandatory safety training includes Fall Protection, Confined Space Entry, Arial lifts, WHMIS, and First Aid (training provided by the employer if necessary).

·        Successful completion of physical demand testing and a clean background check.

·        Display punctuality, reliability, and a positive can-do attitude.

·        Willingness to work overtime or extended shifts as needed.

·        Effective communication skills with individuals of varying technical/non-technical knowledge, skills, or experience.

·        Ability to work independently or collaboratively within a team, ensuring efficient operations, excellent customer service, and a commitment to delivering high-quality work.

Position details:

·        Hiring 1 position. This is a Full-time, Permanent, Unionised position, working 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

·        Shift work, on-call response, and extended hours will be required based on operational demands.

·        The per-hour wage for this position as per the Collective Agreement is $39.84

Working conditions:

This is a *safety-sensitive position requiring work on bridges, bridge properties, buildings, below bridges, and within bridge towers. The role involves frequent physical activity, including lifting up to 50 lbs regularly (and up to 100 lbs occasionally), standing, walking, climbing, bending, and working at heights of approximately 170 to 320 feet and in confined spaces. Employees must be able to work safely in varying weather conditions, around traffic and moving equipment, and in environments with moderate to heavy noise. The position requires strong attention to detail while monitoring, testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining electronic systems and equipment. Candidates must be comfortable working independently in physically demanding and potentially hazardous conditions.

The Bridge Engineer reports directly to the Chief of Infrastructure and Asset Management/ Engineering Manager and participates in key senior Management Team initiatives as required. The Bridge Engineer is responsible for providing engineering input, advice, and direction to maintain the safety of the two bridges, approaches, and related facilities. They work collaboratively, effectively and cooperatively in a coordinated manner with the senior bridge personnel to deliver projects as per their defined scope, the specified quality, on time and on budget. This role is accountable for preparing and issuing requests for proposals (RFPs), tender documents, and other documents required for the selection and onboarding of consultants and contractors, as well as overseeing the ongoing relationship throughout the life of a project. This position also provides guidance, coaching and mentoring to co-operative engineering students and support to other HHB departments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide engineering advice and technical direction to support the safety, reliability and long-term performance of HHB’s bridges, approaches, ancillary structures and related facilities.
• Develop technical work plans, scopes, investigations, analyses, preliminary designs, risk assessments, cost estimates and schedules for infrastructure projects.
• Assess bridge conditions and recommend repair, rehabilitation, retrofit or replacement solutions that support sound asset management and lifecycle planning.
• Prepare and review engineering reports, designs, specifications, tender documents, requests for proposals and other technical procurement materials.
• Support consultant and contractor selection, contract administration, change orders, project documentation and technical oversight throughout the project lifecycle.
• Monitor project scope, quality, risks, schedules and budgets in collaboration with senior engineers, the Project Management Office, consultants and contractors.
• Conduct site inspections and support investigations related to structural incidents, deficiencies, unusual events and bridge asset condition.
• Use inspection, maintenance and Computerized Maintenance Management System data to inform evidence-based decisions on infrastructure health, risk and priorities.
• Build effective working relationships with internal teams, consultants, contractors, regulatory agencies and technical stakeholders.
• Promote a strong safety culture by ensuring work follows occupational health and safety requirements, HHB policies and safe work practices.

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
• Five to seven years of relevant engineering experience.
• Member in good standing, or eligible for membership, with Engineers Nova Scotia.
• Strong knowledge of structural engineering principles, infrastructure maintenance, construction practices and project delivery.
• Experience preparing technical reports, specifications, scopes of work, estimates, schedules, tender documents and requests for proposals.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, judgement and communication skills, with the ability to present clear technical recommendations.
• Proficiency with standard data management tools and engineering-related software.
• Valid Canadian Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
• Project management experience, including the ability to manage multiple priorities and coordinate with cross-functional teams.
• Assets include specialized knowledge of long-span or suspension bridges, project management training or accreditation, and experience in a complex public sector, Crown corporation or similar environment.

Position details:

• This is a Full-time, Permanent, Non-union position, working 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
• On-call response or extended hours will be required based on operational demands.
• The annual salary range for this position is $91,813 - $114,766.

Working conditions:

Primarily office-based, with occasional site visits to bridges, construction sites and industrial environments. Site work may involve exposure to weather, traffic hazards, noise, active construction areas, safety-sensitive locations, work at heights, and work in confined spaces. Use of required personal protective equipment, including fall-protection equipment where applicable, and adherence to HHB safety procedures are mandatory. The role requires strong attention to detail when reviewing drawings, reports, technical documentation, inspection findings and project deliverables. Occasional deadlines, project pressures, safety-sensitive decisions, on-call requirements, or travel may be required to address site issues. Safety training and specialized PPE will be provided by the employer.
